Scots Dictionary

In your exploration of  Scottish ancestry you may come across a word in old Scottish documents or records that you do not recognise. It may be a Scots word.

Scots as a dialect or language should not be confused with the entirely separate Gaelic language of the Highlands, which remains an important language in the north-west Highlands and Islands. The Scots tongue, or Lallans as it is sometime called, was the everyday language of lowland Scotland,  known worldwide from the poetry and writings of Robert Burns.

There are several websites offering on-line dictionaries and information on  Scots words.

Dictionary of the Scots Language : definitive on-line editions of both the 12-volume Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, and the 10-volume Scottish National Dictionary combined

Scottish Language Dictionaries : aim to develop dictionaries and promote the languages of Scotland

The Wedderburn Pages  : a glossary of archaic terms used in old Scots documents, including legal terms linked to property, wills and testaments.

Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) Glossary : of terms used in Scottish legal and historical documents

The Alternative Scots Dictionary : offers many slang Scots words, downloadable as a PDF file

Occupations - If the word denoted an occupation or trade check here

Medical Term -If the word was on a death certificate indicating cause of death then check here
